In English the sound is written as a neigh, and is called a whinny. If you’ve ever heard a horse’s sound, you know it’s hard to describe. ![]() Many dogs woof or ruff, but small dogs yip and yap (someone yappy is someone who talks a lot), while large dogs have a deep bow-wow.Īll these sounds are called barking. A dog that says “woof” is not “woofing,” it’s barking. Dogs: woofĭogs make many noises, depending on what they’re feeling and even how big they are.Īngry dogs growl, scared dogs whimper, and some dogs (and wolves) howl. Or they might hiss, which is also the sound a snake makes. ![]() Unhappy cats might yowl, or cry out loudly. When they’re content (happy)-like when you pet them-they purr. Cats: meowĪs any cat owner knows, cats meow when they want something. This blog post is available as a convenient and portable PDF that youĬlick here to get a copy. So in this post, you’ll learn 17 animal sounds in English, like meow, woof and neigh. They can also help you understand how to pronounce words better. Knowing animal sounds in English might seem unimportant, but these sounds are a part of culture. Some animal sounds and verbs are also used in everyday conversation to mean different things. The sounds of birds, dogs, cats and other animals change from language to language.Īnimal sounds are a type of onomatopoeia-words that imitate sounds. It might be time to get your hearing checked. Follow the link below to watch BBC’s video of the desert rain frog squeaking his heart out: When provoked, the frog makes one of the most bizarre animal sounds: an angry squeak that sounds almost identical to a squeaky toy! This squeaky amphibian has an extremely small habitat – only about 2,000 square kilometres – that is significantly threatened by habitat loss due to expanding cities. The desert rain frog is a solitary amphibian that can be found living exclusively along the western coast of South Africa and Namibia. That’s a pretty impressive sound for such a small animal, and what a way to hunt your prey! Desert Rain Frog: Squeak The sound of the snap has been measured at over 200dB! That’s louder than a 12-gauge shotgun (165dB) and a jet engine (140db). Snapping shrimp are capable of snapping their claw shut so quickly and vigorously that it generates a shock wave as it moves away from the animal. You might think that the shrimp would use this claw to grab its prey, but they actually kill their prey with the noise it makes. One distinct feature that many of these species have in common is the large front claw that can grow to be almost half the size of its body. Snapping Shrimp: Underwater CannonĪlso know as pistol shrimp, snapping shrimp are apart of the Alpheidae family, in which there are about 1,000 species. Cheetahs typically use this call during distress or to locate their young. The noise is incredibly similar to the call that comes from a distressed chickling, definitely one of the strangest animal sounds. Their young aren’t too dissimilar from domesticated cats and kittens, they love to roughhouse and purr just like our feline friends! One of the biggest, and perhaps strangest, differences is in the very distinct ‘chirping’ sound that they make. ![]() The cheetah lives mostly in southern Africa but has many of the same tendencies as a domesticated house cat. One fish tank, underwater microphone and piranha later, biologists discovered that dogs aren’t the only animals that bark – piranhas do too! A piranha’s bark is a not-so-subtle warning saying, ‘Leave me alone,’ ‘I might bite you,’ or ‘now I’m really angry.’ Cheetahs: Chirping Piranhas: BarkingĪs it turns out, piranhas can be pretty great communicators and make some pretty interesting noises when they’re grumpy! Researchers were already aware that piranhas are able to make sounds – picking one up out of water can prompt a croak from red-bellied Piranhas. That’s right, they hum! The humming was 92Hz in frequency, which is still audible to humans but it’s pretty low. Other than the occasional snort or grunt, the team discovered that at night, giraffes hum to each other. A team at the University of Vienna set out to find out just that and, over an 8-year period, gathered 947 hours’ worth of noise recordings from giraffes. ![]() Have you ever been to Monarto or Adelaide Zoo and wondered what noise a giraffe makes? You’re not alone! Until recently, scientists were under the impression that their long-necked vegetarian friends were strictly silent animals. ![]() Furthermore, CSP is used in the prediction of stoichiometric hydrates 34 and solvates 35, 36, but without explicitly considering relative humidity or solvent activity. CSP can be used to identify the most stable, possibly still to be discovered, crystal form of pharmaceutically relevant molecules 20, 21, 32 and has started to be applied early in the molecular and materials design cycles by balancing accuracy and computational efficiency 33. The capabilities of CSP have improved greatly in recent years by the inclusion of temperature-dependent free-energy calculations, yet without rigorously assessing the accuracy of such predictions 2, 4, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31. To complement experimental efforts, computational methods, in particular crystal structure prediction (CSP), are becoming important for polymorph risk assessment and control 3, 5, 20, 21, 22, 23. ![]() Crystal form selection remains a challenge because of the implications for physical and chemical stability, solubility, dissolution, nucleation barriers, mechanical properties, filtration, powder flow and, under consideration here, the formation of hydrates and solvates stable within accessible temperature and humidity ranges 1, 17, 18, 19. The development of an undesirable crystal form can have harmful consequences, as shown in the cases of ritonavir and rotigotine 12, 15, 16. Their physicochemical properties depend on an interplay of chemical composition and molecular packing within a crystal structure, known as a crystal form or polymorph when more than one arrangement exists 10, 11, 13, 14. Molecular crystals are important components of food products 6, semiconductors 7, explosives 8, agrochemicals 9 and pharmaceuticals 10, 11, 12. These contributions reduce the gap between the needs of the experimentalist and the capabilities of modern computational tools, transforming crystal structure prediction into a more reliable and actionable procedure that can be used in combination with experimental evidence to direct crystal form selection and establish control 5. The calculated free energies have standard errors of 1–2 kJ mol −1 for industrially relevant compounds, and the method to place crystal structures with different hydrate stoichiometries on the same energy landscape can be extended to other multi-component systems, including solvates. Here we redefine the state of the art, primarily by improving the accuracy of free-energy calculations, constructing a reliable experimental benchmark for solid–solid free-energy differences, quantifying statistical errors for the computed free energies and placing both hydrate crystal structures of different stoichiometries and anhydrate crystal structures on the same energy landscape, with defined error bars, as a function of temperature and relative humidity. In silico crystal form selection has recently come much closer to realization because of the development of accurate and affordable free-energy calculations 2, 3, 4. The physicochemical properties of molecular crystals, such as solubility, stability, compactability, melting behaviour and bioavailability, depend on their crystal form 1. ![]() Nature volume 623, pages 324–328 ( 2023) Cite this article \): The Three Kinds of Cubic Unit Cell.Predicting crystal form stability under real-world conditions ![]() The best cheap projectors you can buy in 2023 1. Finally, we use a colorimeter mounted on a tripod, 30cm from the screen, to check the brightness and contrast levels, along with colour accuracy and colour depth. We test any built-in speakers at low, medium and high volume levels, and run the projector on battery power, where available, to see how long the battery lasts. We’ll also use any built-in Chromecast features to cast 1080p or 4K video directly from a tablet or smartphone. We then use the projector to watch a range of test material, including blockbuster movies, popular streaming series, and drama or documentary shows, to see how well the projector handles them. Where projectors lack such features, we plug in a Roku 4K Streaming Stick already set up with those apps. Where a projector has built-in streaming features, we install a range of Android apps, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube and Disney+. ![]() We test all projectors by setting them up from scratch in a darkened room with an 80 – 100in screen. A throw ratio of 1.5 means that for every 1.5m the projector is away from your wall, an image width of 1m is created, at 3m distance, an image width of 2m is created and so on. Short throw projectors can project large images from a position very close to a screen or wall. Throw ratio: It sounds technical but it’s an important specification and refers to the size of image the projector can create from a given distance.Bluetooth: This isn’t used to transfer video – the technology doesn’t have enough bandwidth – but some products use it so the projector can double as a Bluetooth speaker.Built-in speakers and audio output: Many models have built in speakers but most aren’t up to much so it’s worth making sure there’s either a 3.5mm audio output or Bluetooth facility so you can hook up an external speaker.Remote control: Most come with one of these but some do not and it’s a real pain if you don’t have one.Auto-keystone and autofocus: Saves time in setting up the image because you don’t have to fiddle around with menu settings and focus wheels. The core features are covered above but there are other features to take note that are worth having: What other features should I look out for? ![]() If you’re after the sharpest, brightest possible image for your money, avoid pocket-sized, battery-powered projectors and opt for a mains-powered machine.Ī mains-powered projector is more likely to have a lamp that’s bright enough to produce big, bright images, and is the best choice for bedroom or living room movie watching if you don’t need to carry it around too much. ![]() Indeed, cheap often means portable or even battery powered. Portable or mains powered?Īt lower price points, many projectors tend to be on the smaller side. Some also allow you to cast video or screen mirror from a mobile device and send audio via Bluetooth to headphones or a speaker. However, it’s also worth looking out for projectors with smart TV features and built-in apps such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and BBC iPlayer. Many will also allow you to play video files stored on a USB thumb drive. Most will have an HDMI input, which is perfect for hooking up a games console, Blu-ray player or streaming stick. It’s also worth thinking about how you intend to use your projector. READ NEXT: The best portable projectors to buy What connectivity do you need? Bear in mind, though, that some budget projectors aren’t designed to be used that heavily over such long periods, and might collapse long before the lamp does, as heat and dust take their toll on the optical system and the moving parts. Traditional lamps will often give you higher brightness levels, but the bulb might last for only 4,000 to 6,000 hours, so it might need replacing after three or four years if used a lot. Many budget projectors use an LED source, and the upside of the relatively low brightness level is that the light source lasts for ages often up to 20,000 hours or more. The biggest factor that determines a projector’s brightness is the light source that it uses. Expect to pay closer to £1,000 for one of those. Alas, 4K technology has not yet reached the realms of cheap projectors. We’d recommend a minimum of 720p for good image quality but you may want to sacrifice sharpness for more features, higher brightness or portability.Įither way, the best native resolution you’re going to get currently from a sub-£500 projector is 1080p. Spend around £200 and more, however, and you’ll quickly see resolution levels rise. ![]() Smart Recorder manages and performs all your recording tasks easily. Let's walk through what's needed to make this work. If you, like me, use Visual Studio Code with the Remote Development extensions, a few tweaks are needed, but after this you can use this functionality right from within your dev containers even and/or while using remote development servers. It can even do this for you with the click of a button. Setting this up is very easy, as the 1Password app tells you what configuration files to modify, and what to add. What's more, these brand new features were also instantly available in their Linux client. With this you can easily sign your Git commits and log in to machines through SSH with the keys stored in your 1Password. This lets you add your SSH key(s) to 1Password, and configure 1Password as your authentication agent for both Git and SSH. In March of 2022, 1Password announced new features SSH and Git support, built right into 1Password. As soon as all the needed features were in place in the beta – like creating/editing entries, this wasn't actually there initially), I switched over to their app, and I've been using it ever since. We experience the wildness of the ocean, but less than the keepers who used to live in the lighthouses in Brittany, where the sea is much deeper and they really felt the force of the waves coming in. There are sand banks around the island which are constantly changing and with them the surrounding currents, so you need to understand the dangers. We have professional boat pilots who bring us and provisions to and fro from the island but we still need to be able to read the sea. I live on the Ile d’Oléron just to the north and I have never lived more than 200metres from the coast. To do that and to be practically alone on a little island in the middle of the sea is something I had always dreamt of being able to do. I like to live in a similar way when I am on land, living in an old stone building which needs looking after, using different artisanal skills. I heard they were looking for someone, and as I also loved everything to do with lighthouses, I applied. Why did you choose to become a lighthouse keeper? We work one week on, one week off, two weeks on, two weeks off and our schedules are staggered so that we are never with the same colleague for more than a week. We have to do the work of a mechanic, electrician, plumber, builder, carpenter, painter etc, and in the summer, a tourist guide when it is open to visitors.
